Real Live Theatre is a cooperatively produced theatre company based in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts.

"THE VALLEY'S MOST ADVENTUROUSLY ECLECTIC NEW ENSEMBLE."

-Chris Rohmann, The Valley Advocate

Known for challenging, inspiring, and amplifying the diverse voices of their community, Real Live Theatre is a force to be reckoned with in the dense cultural thicket of the Pioneer Valley. They seek to create dynamic and powerful pieces of storytelling. From emerging artist and original work to reimagining the classics, their work is bold, modern, and visible.

In 2015 I worked with them to create a strong new brand that accented their mission.
The following year I teamed up with them again to design the marketing for their original piece “The Life and Death of Queen Margaret.”

“THE LIFE AND DEATH OF QUEEN MARGARET”

The Life and Death of Queen Margaret was a remarkably groundbreaking piece, boasting an all female cast, in a poignant reversal of the Shakespearean norm, and celebrating a character deserving of a title all her own.

Full of characteristic Shakespearean violence, struggles for power, love, and loss, this play outlines the fierce, bold side of Margaret’s nature.

Notes on Design:

For centuries the triangle has represented many versions of “femininity”, from literal to figurative.

In particular the upside down triangle is often seen as a symbol for female, goddess, or womb. It can also symbolize time as “Past-Present-Future” and the stages of a woman’s life as “Maiden-Mother-Crone.”

It should also be noted that in terms of weight-bearing and structural integrity, the triangle is the strongest shape.

I played on all of these potential meanings in the art for
Queen Margaret, fitting for the character in the titular role. In lengthening the shape, it takes on a decidedly more threatening mood, even suggesting an impending weapon.

Additionally, these posters were to live amongst hundreds of other busy flyers. By choosing a bold approach with large pools of color, also in coordination with the brand I established in the previous year, I guarunteed
Queen Margaret would not go unnoticed
